Purpose
This blog is intended to augment our church web-site, NewPhilly.Org. It’s primary object Christian Education that issues in action. I hope to offer “A daily dose of encouragement for faithful living.” If it serves the congregation of New Philadelphia Moravian Church, I will be pleased. If it serves non-members and new friends, it will be lagniappe.
A History of the Name Offline and Online
The Everyday Counselor was started as a newspaper column by the Rt. Rev. Dr.Herbert Spaugh, Sr. after he was sent to Charlotte, N.C. to start a Moravian Church. It was published in The Charlotte News and dozens of other southern papers for more than 40 years. It drew countless people through the doors of The Little Church on the Lane. I met many of them when I was the associate pastor of the church from 1977-79. Just before the Bishop’s death in 1978, he asked me to keep the column alive. I was willing, but the papers that subscribed to the column were not. They did not want the counsel of a new pastor less than thirty years old. Never-the-less, the Bishop’s family, especially Herbert Spaugh, Jr. gave me the rights to the name, and offered financial support if I would take up the work. For almost two decades I could not. Then, in 1996 with the help of Herbert and Susan Spaugh I launched a website, EverydayCounselor-dot-Com. For several years I maintained the site alone, with little success. Though not widely read, the site was a tool for learning about the web. When the time was right, several of us mirrored the site with a site designed for New Philadelphia Moravian Church. The church site soon eclipsed the original site in scope and purpose, serving up thousands of pages each month. The Everyday Counselor name fell into disuse. After some years, I foolishly allowed the EverydayCounselor-dot-Com domain name to expire. Then, in February of 2008 my son, Jonathan Green, challenged me to begin anew. He backed up his challenge in two very concrete ways. First, he registered the domain names that now serve this sight, EverydayCounselor.Org and EverydayCounselor.Net. Secondly, he introduced me to WordPress , and assured me that using a WordPress Blog I could realize my 1996 vision for recasting the Everyday Counselor newspaper column as a website. Without my son’s encouragement, this sight would not exist. Thanks for reading this short history. I hope that you will visit often.
May God bless you richly!
